I am in a situation where I am unable to enroll during the Open Season although I'm still active on my agency's payroll. Can I still enroll?
If you were unable to enroll during the entire Open Season for reasons outside of your control, you may qualify for a Belated Enrollment . To qualify, Belated Enrollment requests must involve specific reasons (listed below) for consideration. If requested, you must also be prepared to provide proof of the reason you could not enroll during Open Season.
Reasons for consideration include:
- If you were out of the country during the entire Open Season with no access to the Internet or phone.
- If you had a personal situation (such as hospitalization, major illness, or death in the family, etc.) that prevented enrollment during the entire Open Season.
- If you were waiting on a retirement decision.
To request Belated Enrollment, complete and return a Belated Enrollment Form to us as instructed on the form within 30 days after Open Season ends.
A Belated Enrollment which has been accepted by FSAFEDS no later than December 31 following Open Season is effective on January 1. If we accept your enrollment after December 31, your Belated Enrollment will be effective the day after your election has been accepted by FSAFEDS. Once enrollment is effective, it cannot be changed unless you experience a qualifying life event (PDF).
Claims for services incurred prior to the enrollment effective date are not eligible for reimbursement.
